Rising Math Stars: Ingenuity Students Advance to MATHCOUNTS State Competition

The Ingenuity Project is thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at this year’s Baltimore/Chesapeake Chapter Competition MATHCOUNTS competition held at The McDonogh School on January 31st. George from James McHenry and Giovanni from Mt. Royal delivered exceptional performances, earning qualification to the state-level competition. Congratulations to all the hard working participants!

“Our James McHenry MathCounts program continues to grow, and I am so proud of this year’s team (and their supportive parents!) who dug out from the snow and braved coming out to the regional competition in icy weather. Special kudos to George who was our team high scorer for the second year in a row and is the first James McHenry Ingenuity student to qualify to compete at the state level!”
– Kathy LaPlant, Ingenuity James McHenry Math TeacherÂ

“It is always a joy to take students to participate in the annual MathCounts Chapter Competition. I think that it is both an affirmation of the hard work that they have put in at our weekly practices and an eye-opening experience to complete against other top math students from the larger area. Students always enjoy testing themselves against the very top students as they watch the tournament style countdown round. We were excited to have a 6th grader from our team qualify for the state tournament and will be continuing our weekly practices to help him prepare for the next round of competition. This step of success gives returning students a goal to shoot for in next year’s competition.”

Gladys West: The Mathematical Mind Behind How the World Navigates
Gladys West was a pioneering mathematician whose brilliance helped lay the foundation for the GPS technology that shapes our world today. Dr. West passed away on January 17, 2026. Her groundbreaking work in modeling the Earth’s shape and charting satellite orbits was instrumental to the development of the GPS satellite system. Though her contributions went unrecognized for far too long as one of the system’s “hidden figures,” her legacy is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of Black excellence in STEM.
