MAY 2011
Perfect 800 SAT scores
Grace Kearney on Math SAT with total score of 2380, Matt Ekey and Edward Samson on Math 2 SAT 2, Stephen Timmel on Math 2 and Physics SAT 2, Michael Tontchev on Chemistry SAT 2 and Jinjie Wu on US History SAT 2.

Future Scholars Program at Johns Hopkins University
Joseph Cleary, Matt Ekey, Stephen Timmel and Michael Tontchev have been selected to participate in the Program.
Its an opportunity for high school seniors to take Hopkins regularly scheduled university-level mathematics courses for Hopkins credits.

APRIL 2011

2011 Baltimore Scholars Award
10 Ingenuity seniors received four-year, full-tuition scholarships to the Johns Hopkins University: Camaree Barr, Caryn Carson, James Fulwilwer, Selena Guerrero-Martin, Muhammad Hamza, Justus Jackson, Daniel Jalova, Jonathan McKenzie, and Edward Samson.

Gates Millennium Scholar
Ingenuity senior Muhammad Hamza is a 2011 Gates Millennium Scholar.
The goal of the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential.
National History Day Statewide Competition
Caryn Carson
won first place in the regional competition and the Award for Excellence in Civic Action and Engagement in the statewide competition.


International Bridge Building Contest (IBBC)
The 2011 IBBC was held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois on April 30, 2011. This year, two teams from Poly were eligible to compete in this competition. Shavonte Brandon and Nadine Benavides, Ingenuity 9th grades, won second place for their entry. Trey Huff, also a 9th grade Ingenuity student, finished in eleventh place. Shavonte's and Nadine's bridge had an efficiency score of 3855 (the ratio of the mass supported divided by the mass of the structure itself); Trey's bridge efficiency in the IBBC event was 2851. Congratulations to our students for their international success at solving this challenge in structural engineering!

U.S. Presidential Scholars Program
Dana Katzenelson is a 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program semifinalist.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

Maryland Science Olympiad
Ingenuity team won 1st place in regional competition, sweeping away all the 1st place medals for more than 10 different events.
MARCH 2011
The Carson Scholars Fund
Abena Apaw, Dylan Balter, Gerardo Camarena, Caryn Carson, Matthew Ekey, Victoria Jennings, Billy Lu, Kerra McKnight, Grace Kearney, and Molly Tunis are Carson Scholars.

Perfect 800 SAT scores
Muhammad Hamza and Michael Tontchev scored 800 on Math SAT, and John Beck and Grace Kearney scored 800 on Reading SAT.

AMC 12
Muhammad Hamza, Dana Katzenelson and Lawrence Wang qualified to take the American Invitational Mathematics Exam (AIME).

Baltimore Science Fair

Michael Tontchev won the Grand Prize in Physical Science ("Subject identification in a sentence using plain context-free grammars"). Michael will represent the Greater Baltimore region in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, May 8-13 in Los Angeles.
Elias Weston-Farber won 1st place in Biological Sciences.
Additional Awards: Michael Tontchev received the Yale Science and Engineering Association Award, the Armed Forces Electronics and Communications Award, National Security Award, the US Army Award for Science and Engineering Excellence and First Place Award from the Baltimore Chapter 1 Physical Science. Edward Sampson received the First Place Award from the Baltimore Chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery. Ilenna Jones received the Third Place Award from the US Public Health Service, Surgeon General's Special Award Certificate.

MARCH 2011
Maryland Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)
Anna Manalad won 1st place in Oral Presentations (“The Potential for Allogeneic Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells to Enhance Blood Vessel Growth in a Rabbit Model of Peripheral Arterial Disease”); 3rd Place: Michael Tontchev (“Subject Identification in a  Sentence Using Non-Semantic Context-Free Grammars“); 4th Place: Elias Weston-Farber ("Effect of Codon Optimization on Yeast TY-1 Transposition (Understanding rogue parasitic DNA elements existing within the genome of most organisms)). Anna will be one of the two students from the state of Maryland who will compete at the 49th National JSHS in San Diego CA on April 27 – May 1, 2011.  Michael and Elias will attend the national event as non-competing student delegates.

FEBRUARY 2011
USA Bio Olympiad
Four Ingenuity at Poly seniors, Caryn Carson, Ilenna Jones, Dana Katzenelson and Lawrence Wang are USA Bio Olympiad semifinalists
As the premiere biology competition for high school students in the United States, the USA Biology Olympiad enriches the life sciences education of nearly 10,000 talented students annually. It provides the motivation and skills training to take them beyond their classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness.

Maryland MATHCOUNTS
Molly Tunis and Laura Seaberg of the Ingenuity at Roland Park placed 11th and 18th respectively in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition and qualified for the state competition. Molly Tunis competed in the prestigious “Countdown Round,” a fast-paced oral competition in which the16 highest scoring students compete head-to-head in front of the entire audience.
  Maryland State Advisory Council on Gifted and Talented Education
Dan Borgnia and Ilenna Jones, Ingenuity at Poly seniors, received a Student Achievement in Gifted and Talented Education award at the Advisory Council annual reception "Celebrating Gifted and Talented Education."

JANUARY 2011
Maryland Wood Bridge Challenge
Ingenuity at Poly students took 1st , 2nd and 3rd place in the Maryland Engineering Challenge for wood bridges. 9th grader Trey Huff won the contest when his structure supported over 2700 times its own weight. Classmates Shavonte Brandon and Nadine Benavides came in second with an efficiency score of 2650, and Brooks Gearhart came in 3 rd with a score of 2600. Trey also earned the award for the lightest structure that satisfied all the rules. Trey, Shavonte and Nadine will represent the state of Maryland at the International Bridge Building Contest, to be held in April at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois.

Intel Science Talent Search
Dan Borgnia and Ilenna Jones, Ingenuity at Poly seniors, have been named Intel Science Talent Search semifinalists! There were 1744 applicants from 30 states and DC,  and 300 semifinalists were selected. Dan's research:  Orientation-Dependent Elastic Energy of Diskoidal Colloids in Nematic Fluids; Ilenna's research:     Gene Expression and DNA Methylation of KCNQ2 and KCNQ3 in Bipolar Disorder.

National Honor Society
Thirteen Ingenuity students were inducted to the William R. King Chapter of the National Honor Society: Anne Blonder, Gerardo Camarena, Diamonique Clark, Matthew Ekey, Selena Guerrero-Martin, Joshua Greenspan, Muhammad Hamza, Mary Kamos, Grace Kearney, Anna Manalad, Derek Riley, Candice Simmons, Lawrence Wang.

NOVEMBER 2010

Perfect 800 SAT scores
Seniors Muhammad Hamza and Alexander Katona received perfect 800 scores: Mohammad on Chemistry SAT 2 and Alexander on Math SAT.

QuestBridge Scholarship
Ingenuity senior Ilenna Jones has been selected for admission to Dartmouth College with a QuestBridge College Match scholarship. This year, 310 finalists were matched with QuestBridge College Match awards with a total of 3 students admitted as Quest Scholars at Dartmouth.

OCTOBER 2010
National Achievement Scholarship Program

Justus Jackson, Peter Jennings and Jonathan McKenzie are winners in the 2011 Competition. Camaree Barr, Terrell Buckson, Ilenna Jones, Kerra McKnight and Paul Taylor are named Outstanding Participants Referred to Colleges.

National Merit Scholarship Program
Dana Katzenelson and Lawrence Wang are the winners, Alexander Katona is a semifinalist. 10 Ingenuity seniors are Commended Students in the 2011 Program: Dan Borgnia, Caryn Carson, James Fulwiler, Selena Guerro-Martin, Mohammad Hamza, Justus Jackson, Peter Jennings, Michael Leung, Edward Samson and Marie Stelmack.
